Would you like a career working within the outdoor activity industry but don’t want to be in the classroom full-time? This course will give you an opportunity to learn, develop and practise the skills you need to further your career in this industry. You will receive training and mentoring in the workplace which will be guided and supported by your college Trainer/Assessor.

As an Outdoor Activity Instructor, you will guide children and adults in activities and pastimes such as canoeing, sailing, climbing, surfing, cycling, hillwalking, archery, bushcraft, rock pooling, geology, plant identification, habitat or wildlife walks at an introductory level.

Course Content

You will be required to undertake and have an understanding of a number of different core skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to complete this apprenticeship. These include:

How to prepare for an activity session
How to lead groups safely in the outdoors
Techniques for developing peoples skills and knowledge
How to motivate participants and encourage involvement
How to care for participants, equipment and the environment

If you do not already hold level 2 functional skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 4 or C), you will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

Apprentices can apply to become members of the Institute for Outdoor Learning when they complete this apprenticeship.

Entry Requirements

GCSE Grade 4 or C in maths and English or level 2 functional skills in maths and English. Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one. Due to the nature of the work within the sector, employers will usually require employees to be 18 years of age or above.

Next Steps

You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.
