This course is ideal for those who are looking to progress their career in Horticulture and take the next step to becoming a supervisor. You will build a portfolio of evidence at college and in the workplace with project based assessments on industry subjects.

Course Content

You will be required to undertake and have an understanding of a number of different core skills, knowledge & behaviours in order to complete this apprenticeship. These include:

Understanding what nutrients plants need
Knowledge of what grows well in different soils
How to use and maintain gardening tools and equipment
Plant removal
Pest and disease control

The following qualifications will need to be achieved prior to taking the end point assessment:

Emergency first aid: Level 2 award in emergency first aid at work.
Pesticides: Level 2 Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance OR Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Pesticides

If you do not already hold level 2 functional skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 4 or C), you will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment.

You will be required to attend college one day a week.

Entry Requirements

GCSE Grade 4 or C in maths and English or level 2 functional skills in maths and English. Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.

Next Steps

You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.

Materials Required

Suitable work clothes and steel toe-capped safety boots - all protective equipment will be inspected by the course instructor. Waterproofs/change of clothes in case of inclement weather Gloves. Writing Materials - notebook and pen.
