Employers are looking for people with practical skills and in-depth knowledge of plants, soils, landscaping and design, plus a sound business sense. This one year course, equivalent to 1 and a half A Levels, will help you establish an all round understanding of horticultural principles and practices whilst working and learning in the Grade 2 listed Kingston Maurward gardens.

It is suitable for anyone interested in a career working within the ‘green’ industries and would appeal to people with many different skill sets and interests – creative, scientific, energetic and entrepreneurial. You will also benefit from work experience where you will make essential contacts within the horticultural industry and perfect your knowledge.

Course Content

Health and Safety & work related experience
Plant knowledge and identification
Machinery use and operation
Maintain turf in parks and gardens
Garden design, production and landscape construction
Plant propagation – glasshouse and nursery techniques
Principles of plant science/health, protection and soil science
Decorative horticulture, including plant establishment & pruning

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at grade 4/5 or above, including English, maths and a science OR a relevant Level 2 Certificate at Distinction level OR an Apprenticeship in horticulture with good levels of maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience, a keen and active interest in commercial gardening and landscaping with the ability to cope with written work is required.
