Arboriculture is an industry with plenty of opportunities for people who are interested and enthusiastic about trees. Arboriculturists care for the nation’s trees in rural and urban situations, devising and implementing the plans to plant, prune and fell trees.

You will learn and practice modern methods of arboricultural techniques and tree care on the Kingston Maurward College estate and in local woodland sites.

This course includes a large amount of practical and theory work giving students the opportunity and confidence to develop the core practical skills and knowledge for employment or further learning and training in woodland management, professional tree care and allied industries.

The Level 3 Advanced Technical Certificate in Forestry and Arboriculture qualification is endorsed by the Arboricultural Association.

Course Content

Units include:
Tree felling and chainsaw use
Land-based industry machine use
Tree care and pruning
Identification, planting and establishment of trees
Plant and soil science
Identification of pests, diseases and disorders of trees
Principles of health and safety
Training towards NPTC qualifications in chainsaw use and tree climbing
Weekly work experience and a 3 week block at Easter for work experience.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs minimum grades 9-3 or A*-D, including English and maths. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will be considered based on previous experience. You will be required to complete a work placement. Tetanus protection is recommended.

Additional Costs

NPTC tests can be arranged if your course tutors think you are of a suitable standard following KMC training. A test fee will be payable to the examining body.

Materials Required

Basic stationery - pens, pencils, ruler and eraser, A4 lever arch files. Protective overalls, work gloves and steel toe-capped boots - all protective equipment will be inspected by the course instructor. Chainsaw Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to current industry standards is required for this course. Work equipment, harnesses, PPE, etc., are provided by the college, but candidates’ own may be used, subject to checks by the instructor. Practical clothing suitable for the weather conditions necessary at all times - polo shirts and sweatshirts are available for purchase at College.
