Would you like a career working within the leisure industry but don’t want to be in the classroom full-time? This course will give you an opportunity to learn, develop and practise the skills you need to further your career in this industry. You will receive training and mentoring in the workplace which will be guided and supported by your college Trainer/Assessor.

You will support, enhance and deliver the day to day operations and services of a leisure / fitness facility. Working as part of a team, you will have responsibility of undertaking a range of operational duties such as assisting with the opening and closing of the facility, undertaking routine maintenance of equipment and maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the environment.

Alongside your operational duties there are five key areas of work all leisure team members will cover; leisure and fitness operations, lifeguard duties, swimming teaching duties, gym instruction and leading group activities.

Course Content

You will be required to undertake and have an understanding of a number of different core skills, knowledge and behaviours in order to complete this apprenticeship. These include:

Basic coaching and motivational techniques
How to assemble, dismantle and store different types of equipment
Lifeguard duties
Planning activity sessions
Monitor customer use of equipment and ensure their safety, intervening as necessary
Conduct gym inductions, client consultations, assessment and review and health screening

The following qualifications will need to be achieved prior to taking the end point assessment:

A IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding.

And one of the following qualifications:

A Swim England Level 2 in Teaching Swimming or A STA level 2 Certificate in Teaching Swimming.

A Level 2 Certificate in Fitness or Gym Instruction awarded by; 1st4sport qualifications, Active IQ, Innovate Awarding, NCFE, VCTC or YMCA Awards.

A Level 3 certificate in First Aid (to be taken either as a stand-alone qualification or as a separate part of the IQL Level 2 Award in Pool Lifeguarding).

If you do not already hold Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 2 or E), you will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English prior to taking the end-point assessment.

On successful completion of this apprenticeship you will be eligible to become an affiliate member of the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA).

Entry Requirements

GCSE grade 2 or E in maths and English or level 1 functional skills in maths and English. Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.

Next Steps

You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.

Additional Costs
