Do you want a career working with horses alongside excellent training? The equine industry is one of the most diverse industries within the land-based sector with opportunities to work in livery yards, riding schools, racing yards and training yards. Horses represent a major asset for their owners and need the skilled attention of devoted and well trained staff. You will adhere to safe working practices, be prepared to work in all weather conditions and often in “out of hours” situations. You will be required to have dedication, commitment and the physical and mental toughness to cope with the rigours of the role.

Course Content

There are several pathways you can take depending on the type of employer you start your apprenticeship with:
Breeding
Driving
Racing
Riding
Non-Riding

Some of the knowledge, skills and behaviour aspects you will cover during your apprenticeship will include:
Safe working practices
Yard and field routines and duties
Horse anatomy, physiology and welfare
Horse handling, care and appearance
Saddlery and equipment
travelling horses
Non-ridden exercise

If you do not already hold Level 1 Functional Skills in maths and English (GCSE grade 2 or E), you will need to achieve this level and take the test for Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and English prior to taking the end-point assessment.

Entry Requirements

GCSE grade 2 or E in maths and English or level 1 functional skills in maths and English. Entry is subject to a successful interview and you will undertake an initial assessment in maths and English regardless of previous qualifications. You must be working under a suitable and relevant contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week. If you do not have an employer, we may be able to help you find one.

Next Steps

You will have the opportunity to progress on to a higher level apprenticeship standard or to continue working within the industry.
