This one year, introductory level course has been developed for students interested in working with horses and is designed to help you to develop a range of basic horse care skills and riding skills. Functional skills or GCSE maths and English are included,where appropriate, work experience, yard duties, trips and guest speakers are also part of this varied study programme.

The course is a good balance of practical sessions and theory sessions to provide the underpinning knowledge of equine care and riding. Work experience at Manor stables develops core employability skills, efficiency and teamwork and a two week external work placement also strengthens the opportunities to work with industry employers and to be actively involved in a commercial environment. Successful completion of this study programme also allows progression on to other qualifications, such as an Intermediate Apprenticeship training programme or Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care.

Next Steps

GCSEs at Grade 1/2 or above in English, maths, science and one other. You must have had some experience of working with horses, ride competantly in walk, trot and canter, have a genuine interest and enthusiasm for horses and you must be prepared to work outside in all weathers. Please note that the Equine Academy has a riding weight limit of 13 stone 5lbs (85kg) for all riders.

Kingston Maurward College Equine Uniform which includes polo shirts, sweatshirts and jackets, which is worn at all times whilst at college. Contribution to study trips BHS exams entry costs, which is optional for those who wish to gain another internationally recognised qualification alongside their vocational studies
