This is the second of three courses for the horse enthusiast to learn and develop skills in a relaxed and informal environment. Maybe you are thinking of buying or loaning a horse or pony, a parent of a pony mad youngster, already an owner but keen to learn all you can about caring for your horse then this course is for you! Even if you do not have your own horse this course will take you on an interesting journey about all things equine! This course is good preparation for people considering taking the British Horse Society Care Assessments in the near future. Please note you do not have to have completed the first course in this series to take part.

Course Content

The course will show you the basic structure of the foot, shoeing procedures, and how to remove a shoe in an emergency. Common injuries, wounds and basic first aid will be covered in the health topic. Feeding horses in different seasons, whether stabled or at grass or in lighter work will be discussed in detail. How to maintain grassland and recognition of weeds or poisonous plants is included. How to fit and inspect tack for soundness, designing stable routines throughout the year, devloping knowledge of bedding systems, insurance needed as a rider or owner will be explored. Safety aspects whilst riding on the road or the countryside will be considered. This 10 week course will give you great foundation skills and knowledge to build upon and will finish with a paper based test in the last week. On successful completion you will be awarded a KMC Certificate.

Entry Requirements

12 years or over. A passion for horses and a desire to develope knowledge and practical skills.
