Qualifications Explained

Level 1 Diplomas

These entry level courses are designed to give you a basic understanding of the subject area and teach practical skills. It will give you a qualification equivalent to achieving four GCSEs at grades D-G.

Level 2 Diplomas

The Level 2 Diploma is equivalent to achieving four GCSEs at Grade A*- C. They are designed to build knowledge and skills for jobs requiring technical understanding and a good level of employability skills. Successful students could expect to enter supervised work or may progress to the Level 3 Diplomas to gain higher level training for supervisory jobs requiring greater responsibility.

Level 3 90 Credit & Extended Diplomas

The two year Level 3 Extended Diploma is broadly equivalent to three A Levels. They are advanced courses that develop higher level technical skills and detailed understanding and knowledge about specific subject areas. Extended Diplomas provide an alternative entry route for university level qualifications. The one year 90 Credit Diploma is the equivalent to one and a half A Levels and is suited to students who enjoy a practical learning style and mature learners looking for a career change. Successful students at Level 3 could expect to enter the workplace at a specialist or supervisory level, possibly leading to management positions.


Apprenticeships are open to young people aged 16-24 and are real jobs with training which allow you to earn while you learn and gain a nationally recognised qualification. Intermediate Apprenticeships offer a Level 2 qualification which is the equivalent to completing 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C. Advanced Apprenticeships offer a Level 3 qualification, the equivalent to three A Levels. All apprenticeship frameworks take between 12-18 months to complete and include the main vocational qualification, functional skills, technical certificate and other professional qualifications specific to the job requirements.
