We have a dedicated and expert Careers Team ready to support you in making well-informed career and progression choices.
Nicky Porter – Assistant Principal Student Experience and Progression
Nicky has worked for Kingston Maurward for several years across a number of different departments within the college , she has a wealth of experience working with staff and students.
She is our Strategic Lead for careers delivery helping to design our careers programme making sure that it hits the 8 Gatsby benchmarks.
Nicky is also responsible for managing the Learning Support team which includes overseeing Greys Loft – our Foundation Learning department.
Nicky is incredibly passionate about supporting our students actively promoting student wellbeing and welfare. She has extensive safeguarding knowledge and experience implementing processes that keep our students safe. Nicky always has the students’ best interests at heart.
Frances Jenkins – Careers and Industry Lead
Frances started at KMC in 2018 as the college’s Industry Placement Coordinator. Before that she worked with long-term unemployed people helping them get back into work. Frances has always had a passion for supporting others and helping people to identify their skills and strengths.
As KMC’s Careers and Industry Lead Frances is responsible for designing, developing and delivering KMCprepared – the college’s careers programme. This includes working with staff, students, employers, colleges and universities to make sure that students get exceptional support to make well-informed career and progression choices.
Frances is particularly keen to help students who may have a health condition; encouraging them to explore ways in which this can be seen as a positive thing, especially when talking to employers.
Penny Carey – Careers Advisor
Prior to her role at KMC, Penny worked as a Careers Adviser with a wide range of young people in schools, colleges and in the community. Penny has a Diploma in Careers Guidance (Parts 1 and 2) and extensive experience working with SEND students.
Penny also works with a number of external agencies and training organisations helping to build great relationships within the local area.
She offers independent and impartial careers guidance to students during the academic year, through 121 careers interviews and group sessions. Her broad ranging knowledge of both KMC courses and other options including apprenticeships, other further education courses, employment and higher education helps students to identify the best pathway for them.
Penny always listens without judgement or bias and gives students a safe space in which to discuss their next steps.

Kate Venables – SUN Progression Mentor
Kate has been working at KMC since September 2019. She has always worked in the education sector, at Swansea University and the University of Bristol in Study and Work Abroad and International Recruitment. After moving to Dorset Kate started working for the National Citizens Service (NCS) recruiting and running summer programmes before joining the SUN Team.
As SUN Progression Mentor Kate’s role involves supporting UniConnect students with all things related to progression – whether that is university, apprenticeships, employment or talking through different options with students who are unsure on their next steps. She offers 121 and small group mentoring, application support, workshops, arranging guest speakers and external visits to help students explore their progression opportunities.
Kate’s area of expertise is essentially all things Higher Education! Kate thoroughly enjoys her role and says it is very rewarding, mentoring and listening to students and working with them to explore their options.
