Singer Student Bursary Presentation
The Association of Singer Car Owners (ASCO) has presented Kingston Maurward with another cheque for £300 for its George Singer Memorial Fund – a bursary for the sole purpose of helping worthy students at the College which started in 2015.
The Singer club has formed strong links with the College due to its founder’s heritage; in 1847 George Singer was born in the parish and his father was farm bailiff at Kingston Maurward.
Singer & Co was founded in 1875 manufacturing high quality bicycles. This evolved into motorcycles and ultimately car manufacture in 1904. The company was eventually bought by Chrysler and the Rootes group in 1970.
ASCO celebrated this link with the College in 2013 with a lakeside rally of some of its beautiful cars, followed by a ceremony and unveiling of a memorial plaque which is located outside the sixteenth century Old Manor House on the estate, where George Singer’s parents lived.
Club members felt strongly about forming a lasting legacy for the College and after lengthy committee discussions concluded that helping students via members’ contributions towards a bursary would demonstrate its dedication to the college and its students.
ASCO intended the fund to be specifically to help students improve to mirror George Singer’s outlook; He was known for his philanthropic attitude towards his own workforce, and actively encouraged activities that would maintain their health and wellbeing.
Committee members of the College’s charity, Kingston Maurward Foundation, will choose the recipient of the bursary, based on the student’s attitude to learning, commitment to their course, and their circumstances.
ASCO attended this year’s Kingston Maurward’s Open Day with some of their historical vehicles and to present this year’s cheque of £300 to the College.
