The Extended Diploma is a well-respected course with an outstanding track record of students entering employment or Higher Education, as it is accepted as an entry qualification for some degree level courses.

During the first year of this course you will complete the units for the Level 3 Diploma. In the second year a further six units are taken to gain the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture.

The first year provides a thorough grounding in the agricultural industry. It enables students to understand technical and management aspects of animal and crop production and to carry out a wide range of practical tasks on the farm.

The second year focuses on deepening students’ understanding of the technical and management aspects of animal and crop production and enabling them to further develop practical skills. As part of the course, training towards a range of certificates of competence can be undertaken to enhance career prospects.

Course Content

During Year 1 you will complete all 12 units from the Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture.

In Year 2, you will complete these additional units: - Business management -Livestock breeding and nutrition -Managing agricultural environments -Agricultural spreaders and sprayers -Grassland management -Pig production OR Principles of land-based machinery.

The second year of the course also offers the opportunity to achieve further additional qualifications such as Telehandlers, PA1/2, ATVs, Safe Use of Veterinary Medicines and Animal Transport. Much of the training for these qualifications is included within the course and in most cases only assessment fees need to be paid by students wishing to achieve these additional qualifications.

The second year of the course includes a week long study tour to Europe.

Employment prospects for qualified and experienced young people with the right attitude are excellent as the industry is experiencing a skills shortage. The course is specially designed to develop practical skills and produce students that are able to operate machinery and look after livestock to a high standard, and who also have the technical and management knowledge required for a successful career.

Entry Requirements

4 GSCEs at grade C or above, including English and Maths and preferably a Science OR a relevant Level 2 Diploma at Distinction level, OR a Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Agriculture with good levels of Maths and English. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will also be considered. Enthusiasm, relevant practical experience and the ability to cope with written work is required. Progression to the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Agriculture is dependent upon successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Agriculture.
