Employers are looking for people with practical skills and in-depth knowledge of plants, soils, landscaping and design, plus a sound business sense. This one year course, equivalent to 1 and a half A Levels, will help you establish an all round understanding of horticultural principles and practices whilst working and learning in the Grade 2 listed Kingston Maurward gardens.

It is suitable for anyone interested in a career working within the ‘green’ industries and would appeal to people with many different skill sets and interests – creative, scientific, energetic and entrepreneurial. You will also benefit from work experience where you will make essential contacts within the horticultural industry and perfect your knowledge.

This course forms the first year of the 2 year Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture course. Successfully completing the Level 3 Diploma will allow you to fast track directly into the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture and complete a higher qualification.



Advanced Technical Diploma in Horticulture (540)

Course Content

Units include:
Plant propagation – glasshouse and nursery techniques
Principles and practices of garden design
Principles of plant health and protection
Plant and soil science
Decorative horticulture, including plant establishment & pruning
Horticulture production
Hard landscape construction
Horticultural machinery and operation
Maintain turf in parks and gardens
Plant knowledge and identification
Weekly work experience and a 3 week block at Easter for work placement.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs minimum grades 9-4 or A*-C, including English and maths. Mature students lacking formal qualifications will be considered based on previous experience. You will be required to complete a work placement. Tetanus protection is recommended.
