This qualification is for you if you want to work with animals, either directly hands-on or within the wider allied services and businesses. It is designed to provide you with a wide range of specialist technical practical skills, together with detailed knowledge and understanding which will prepare you for a diverse range of employment opportunities, or to apply for further learning and training within the animal care and management industries. This qualification provides you with the opportunity to learn about and build on the essentials of working with animals. You will learn how to work safely with animals, be responsible for the planning and carrying out of animal husbandry, their health and handling together with their feeding and nutrition. You will also learn about animal behaviour, animal breeds, welfare and business skills. In the second year you will then opt to specialise in one of the following areas; zoos, wildlife, animal management or applied science.

Course Content

Year 1: For the first year of the course you will complete the units for the Level 3 Advanced Technical Diploma in Animal Management.

Year 2 - Zoos Pathway:
Aquatics welfare and breed development
Avian health and husbandry
Zoological collections
Undertake estate skills
Business management in the land-based sector
Customer care and retail merchandising
Undertake a specialist project in the land-based sector
Farm livestock husbandry and welfare
Small animal rehabilitation

Year 2 - Wildlife Pathway:
Wildlife and ecology conservation
Wildlife management and rehabilitation
Farm livestock husbandry and welfare
Ecological concepts and application
Population surveys, ecology and conservation
Undertake estate skills
Business management in the land-based sector
Undertake a specialist project in the land-based sector
Avian health and husbandry

Year 2 - Animal Management Pathway:

Pet store design and management
Pet allied services
Kennel and cattery management

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs Grade C/4 or above to include English, maths and science. Condition of entry to the second year - Successful completion of year one of Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Animal Management. Recent experience of working with animals is essential. You must be prepared to work outside in all weathers with a range of animals.
