This one year advanced course is ideal for mature students who are seeking a career change. It offers the balance of skills and knowledge needed to perform well in both scientific and animal management environments.

You will improve your animal management experience and confidence through practical work with our range of mammals, reptiles, birds and farm animals in our new animal science facilities.

Theory and classroom work is integrated to ensure that this qualification supports career prospects and develops your academic skills icn order to progress onto university.

This course forms the first year of the two year Level 3 Extended Diploma (see page xx) Successfully completing the 90 Credit Diploma will allow you to fast track directly into the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma and complete a higher qualification.

Course Content

Units include:

Understand and promote animal health
Manage animal accommodation
Understand animal anatomy and physiology
Plan and monitor animal feeding
Undertake animal handling and safe working
Understand and interpret animal behaviour and communication
Understand animal welfare and breed development
Understand the principles and carry out the practice of exotic animal health and husbandry
Understand and undertake wildlife management and rehabilitation
Understand and carry out farm livestock husbandry

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs Grade C or above - to include English, maths or science OR Level 2 qualification in Animal Care with Distinction or an NVQ 2 in an animal related area plus Level 2 Functional Skill. S Mature students will be considered without formal entry requirements, depending on their experience with animals Recent experience of working with animals is essential.
