Do you want to work in a veterinary practice? Perhaps as an animal nursing assistant or veterinary receptionist? Or maybe you want to work in a zoo or help care for animals in a wildlife sanctuary? This one year course will give you the skills you need to start your career.

Working with a wide range of animals including mammals, reptiles, aquatics and exotics, you will study correct feeding practices and handling techniques, health and husbandry and the principals of animal nursing.

This course forms the first year of the two year Level 3 Extended Diploma (see page xx) Successfully completing the 90 Credit Diploma will allow you to fast track directly into the second year of the Level 3 Extended Diploma and complete a higher qualification.

Course Content

Units include:

- Understand and promote animal health
- Manage animal accommodation
- Understand animal anatomy and physiology
- Plan and monitor animal feeding
- Undertake animal handling and safe working
- Understand and interpret animal behaviour and communication
- Understand the principles of Animal Nursing
- Understand the principles and carry out the practice of exotic animal health and husbandry
- Undertake kennel and cattery management
- Understand the principles and carry out the practice of avian health and management

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs Grade C or above - to include English, maths and science OR Level 2 qualification in animal care at Distinction plus Level 2 Functional Skills. Recent experience of working with animals, together with a work placement in a veterinary practice is essential.
