The reserve national champion blacksmith for 2009 - for the second year running - will be at our campus teaching blacksmithing for eight Tuesday evenings, starting January 26.

The part-time course covers topics including tool making, heat treatment techniques, drawing down and twisting, and students will make decorative items such as a forged candleholder.

Simon has so far won eight trophies, ten plaques, and 40 certificates and rosettes at events nationally including the North Somerset, Bath and West, New Forest and Royal Shows.

“This is a practical course and very hands-on,” said Simon, “and reveals some of the mystery, secrecy and superstition surrounding this fascinating trade.

“It caters for the complete beginner and for those with moderate metalworking experience and produces decorative and functional items.

“It may also interest teachers of design and technology, architects and those involved with heritage restoration.”

The course, which is due to run from 6 to 9pm, leads to a college certificate and costs £255.
