Horticultural Students Help at Southfields House

Kingston Maurward College Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horticulture students have once again helped out at Dorchester’s Southfields House as part of the UK’s annual Older Peoples’ Day.

For the fourth consecutive year Kingston Maurward students have been involved in clearing and tidying the communal gardens of the residential home.

Horticulture course tutor, Alan Jacobsen, said: “The way the students conducted themselves and the hard work they carried out was exemplary – they did the College proud. We were invited by the residents to their communal lounge for lunch afterwards with plenty of homemade cakes they had made. The students interacted with the elderly residents in a mature and polite manner – and they enjoyed each other’s company.

“Another benefit was that we were able to build a new industry link with landscaping company Gareth James Gardening Services who we now have an apprentice with. All in all a very good day which was of benefit to all involved – we look forward to next year!”

Residents enjoyed the visit so much that they sent the students a thank you card with a heartfelt note of appreciation.
