 Bridport Centre

For over 60 years, Kingston Maurward College has provided specialist land-based and countryside education and training. This expertise has helped to design a range of courses to meet the local needs of Bridport. Kingston Maurward College, a member of Bridport Local Area Skills and Training (BLAST), offers a range of courses to support the local community - developing skills to meet the needs of employment and development.

Future courses designed to meet local needs - short (one day) courses in:

  • Container gardening for small spaces inc vegetable growing and healthy eating - ideal for growing families!
  • Basic construction/DIY skills
  • Planning a vegetable garden/allotment

For those involved in providing garden services, one day courses in:

  • Introduction to garden design
  • Introduction to plant propagation
  • Servicing lawn mowers & small engines
  • Selecting the right plant for the right place

The newly opened Kingston Maurward College Bridport Centre has been a long time in the planning. Ken Crafer, Project Manager says: “As a college we have built a reputation on delivering high quality specialist training for Dorset, it has long been a desire to tailor make courses within the town to meet local needs.”The location in North Mills Industrial Estate is ideally situated within easy reach of the town centre to allow us to do this.”

Local courses for the locality

Ken adds: “Working in the area, we have put together a choice of some our most popular training requests, although this will certainly continue to evolve to meet local demands.” In the present economic climate there is still a local shortage of suitably qualified people. At this present time the centre is running a Level 1 construction qualification; trainingyoung people in basic block-work and rendering skills.

The centre is also hosting a range of health & safety and food hygiene qualifications – which are legal requirements for many jobs - without the need to travel a great distance to study. The college also works closely with Job Centre Plus to offer a wide range of free training to help get people back into work; from specific trade qualifications through to job search and interview skills - all available free to those who are currently unemployed.

In the pipeline, there is also a range of specialist courses too; including short introductory sessions on sustainable energy - a chance to get an impartial view of the options, working with alternative building materials such as straw bales, and short courses in making the most of the garden or the allotment. As a member of Bridport Local AreaSkills Training (BLAST) the college is working closely with a range of other organisations to form a complete package of training locally.
