Student Council

Aims:

To represent the views of all students
To provide opportunities for students to voice their opinions and to influence the way the College is
managedTo enhance the quality of College life
To involve the whole College community through the creation of new initiatives, solving problems and achieving goals
To enable students to develop confidence and empower them to become active citizens.
To disseminate good practice
To respond to issues raised as soon as possible, but no later than the next meeting.

The Student Council shall discuss issues raised by members representing all students
The Student Council shall disseminate information throughout the College, through class announcements, the Student Ambassadors, student notice boards and the Student Council page on MOODLE
It is the responsibility of Student Representatives to ensure that they represent the views of their Year Groups and are given the opportunity to comment on agenda items in advance, and decisions taken by the Student Council
All Student Representatives shall be expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to their position on the Student Council
Student Representatives shall express the views and concerns of those they are representing
Wherever possible, Student Representatives and/or Ambassadors shall participate in the wider reporting mechanisms of the College (for example, by attending college committees).

The Student Council shall consist of Student Representatives from full-time and part-time courses (who have been formally elected by their Tutor Groups), Student Ambassadors, Principal, Chair of Governors, Assistant Principals, Academy Head (rotating), Student Support Coordinator (Chair), Quality Manager, College Chaplain, Clerk.

All students shall be entitled to stand for election as a Student Representative
Student Representatives shall be formally elected by their course colleagues at the start of each Academic Year. The mandatory official election form will be signed by the appropriate course tutor and sent to the Clerk to Student Council by the required date shown on the election form.

It is expected that all members of the Student Council shall attend scheduled meetings. Any Student Representative failing to attend (absent from) 2 consecutive meetings, without notice or good reason (apologies), shall be deemed to have resigned her/his membership of the Student Council and a replacement sought by election
Notification (apologies) must be sent to the Clerk no later than 24 hours after a missed meeting, failure to do so will result in “absent” being recorded in the Minutes
A Student Representative may resign from her/his position at anytime by submitting a written letter of resignation to the Chair, copied to the Clerk
A Student Representative who has left college or has been dismissed from his or her course shall be considered to have resigned from the Council.

The Student Council reserves the right to form sub-committees and focus groups
Sub-committees and focus groups shall report regularly to Student Council on their progress.

The Student Council shall meet on a monthly basis at a designated time and place
Dates, times and venues of scheduled meetings shall be published on MOODLE by the Clerk to Student Council at the start of each Academic Year
Additional meetings will be determined as necessary
Only members shall regularly attend Student Council meetings
The Student Council shall invite guest speakers as part of their annual programme
Only elected Student Representatives shall have voting rights at Student Council meetings
The Clerk shall keep a register of all Student Representatives in attendance at each meeting
A lunch and refreshments shall be provided at each Student Council lunchtime meeting.

A Quorum shall be the minimum portion of the Student Council that must be present for any decisions or actions to be considered an official act of the Student Council. A Quorum shall be defined as 6 of the members of the Student Council including staff and at least 3 students/student ambassadors.

This Constitution will be reviewed annually, in October, by the Principal, the Ambassadors and the Chair of Student Council. Any proposed changes will need to be ratified by Student Council at the November meeting and by Governors before they can be confirmed
