Kingston Maurward Animal Park

Maybelle and Nymph have been welcomed into the world at Kingston Maurward College − the first Dartmoor foals born on campus so far. Come and meet them now at the Animal Park!
 
Mums Lupin and Elfin are on loan to the college as part of a scheme by the Dartmoor Pony Heritage Trust to try and save the rare breed from extinction.
 
Once old enough the foals will go to foster homes to be trained as children’s riding ponies.
 
“This native breed is being promoted in the region as a lot of the show Dartmoor ponies today are not true Dartmoor’s,” said Barbara Holden, the college’s animal care instructor.
 
“It’s great for our students to see this rare breed up close.”
The mums, who are both 16 and in their last year of breeding, will be found companions and homes on National Trust land to graze.
