Schools – Vocational Training 14+
If you are in Year 10 or 11 and interested in learning practical skills alongside your GCSEs, you can come to College one day a week and study for a qualification. By choosing to take this option, you’ll get plenty of hands-on experience and have a better understanding of the types of career or Apprenticeship you may be suited to.
You can choose from the following:
Animal Care - Level 1 Qualification and a First Certificate in Animal Care
(equivalent to 2 GCSEs A*−C)
- Handle and move a range of animals
- Feed snakes, lizards and chameleons
- Prepare housing for dogs, cats, chinchillas and rats
Equine Studies - Level 1 Qualification and BHS Stage 1 Horse Knowledge and Care
- Horse behaviour
- Anatomy and handling
- Basic grassland care
- Grooming, bedding and mucking out
Practical Countryside − Work towards an Level 1 Qualification in Land−based Operation (equivalent to 5 GCSEs D-G) and potentially BTEC First Certificate in year 2
(equivalent to 2 GCSEs A*−C)
- Work with cattle and sheep
- Prepare and operate tractors
- Plant trees and coppice woodland
- Lay paths
Outdoor Adventure and Sports Coaching − one day per week covering a range of activities for a minimum of half a term
- Climbing and abseiling
- Kayaking and canoeing
- Problem solving
- Map work
Gardening and Landscaping − Level 1 Qualification in Horticulture
- Plant containers for display
- Prune hedges and shrubs
- Take cuttings and propagate plants
- Lay paving blocks and slabs
Turfcare and Groundsmanship − Level 1 Qualification in Horticulture
- Repair damaged turf
- Use cylinder and rotary mowers
- Lay out, aerate and scarify turf
- Mark out sports pitches
Floristry − Level 1 Certificate in Land−based Studies (floristry)
- Carry out basic floristry tasks
- Identify flowers, foliage and plants
- Produce and assemble shop displays
Welding and Blacksmithing − Level 1 Qualification in Performing Engineering Operations
- Gas welding and brazing
- MIG welding and forge welding
- Metalworking procedures
