Is it right for me?

Want to work with animals? Want to be paid as you learn? Then the Apprenticeship programme is for you!
While working full or part time in an animal care establishment, you will come into College on day release for about 12-18 months. During thid time you will gain the theory and practical skills needed for the course assessments. You will also work with the wide variety of animals here at Kingston Maurward College.
The Diploma level 2 forms part of the Apprenticeship scheme: to complete the whole apprenticeship, you will also need to gain key skills and industrial certificates.

What is involved?

College day release will be partly theory and partly practical.

Where will it take me?

Progression onto Diploma Level 3 (Advanced Apprenticeship) if you gain employment or training with supervisory responsibility. Employment within the sector or allied industries.

What's Required?

Good standard of written work, interest in animals and working in the industry. NVQ 1 or GCSEs grade A to E. Funding is available for 16-24 year olds.

How will I be assessed?

Practical assessment supported with written evidence in a portfolio. Independent assessment on three units through multiple choice tests.


What is next?

Diploma Level 3 in Animal Management or full-time courses − Advanced National Certificate Animal Care or National Diploma Animal Management. Part time − National Certificate Animal Care or National Awards.

This qualification forms part of the Apprenticeship framework for Animal Care. It is designed to allow people working in a wide range of animal care environments to achieve recognition for their skills and competence, and enable progression from junior to senior positions. It reflects the skills and knowledge needed to do a job effectively, and shows that a candidate is competent in the area of work the qualification represents, depending on the qualification route chosen. There are specialist routes within the qualification to include Animal Care and Welfare, Zoos/Wildlife Establishments, Dog grooming, Pet Care and Retail and Animal Training.

It replaces the Level 2 NVQ in Animal Care.
