What is involved?

Two days' input followed by 8 week gap, culminating in further 2 days' input and practical assessment

Lead on to Level 3 Certificate in Tutoring in Sport. Working independently as a professional coach.

What's Required?

Candidates should hold an appropriate vocational qualification at least one level above that of the candidates you will be assessing (e.g Level 2 coaching qualification). Minimum age is 17.

Summary :

The purpose of the qualification is to provide candidates who have an ongoing involvement in a particular sport with an introduction to the processes and principles of coaching that sport to adults and children.

The Certificate offers an opportunity for potential coaches to be supported in developing the knowledge of how to effectively plan, conduct and evaluate coaching sessions in an identified sport. This is achieved through an understanding, and the application of the underpinning knowledge of the Level 2 National Occupational Standards in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing and the Level 2 Technical Definition and Assessment Specification for the sport concerned.

Progression :

Successful candidates are eligible to seek employment in paid or voluntary coaching roles. They should look to develop their learning and knowledge of their sport by working with other, more experienced, coaches. Holders of this Certificate may wish to gather further evidence to achieve a Level 2 N/SVQ in Coaching, Teaching and Instructing in a recognised sport. An N/SVQ or individual units of the national standards can only be achieved via an organisation/college approved to offer the N/SVQ and/or appropriate units. Achievement will require the candidates to demonstrate their competence in fulfilling all the performance criteria and range of the national standards, in the workplace, over a period of time.

Following a period of practice as a qualified coach, candidates may choose to develop their skills by participating in continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities offered within their sport and other coaching-related organisations. In addition, they may choose to follow a programme of training for a Level 3 Certificate in Coaching in their chosen sport.

All qualified coaches are encouraged to align to their sport's NGB and take advantage of the professional and educational services, including coach licences and CPD, offered by the NGB.

Overal Assessment Method :

The independent assessment component of the qualification is composed of a minimum of one observed practical assessment of candidates' coaching and evaluation of a session taken from the practical syllabus of a specific sport.

Sub Units :

J/103/1020 Coaching principles and ethics

To provide candidates with the knowledge and understanding of the code of conduct and the means by which they should deal with accidents and injuries - and how to establish an effective and ethical coaching environment.

L/103/1021 Plan coaching sessions

To introduce candidates to the principles of the effective and safe planning of coaching sessions, including how to develop individual, linked and progressive sessions.

R/103/1022 Conduct coaching sessions

To enable candidates to develop their understanding of how to prepare for and deliver safe and effective coaching sessions from the Practical Syllabus of a Sporting Pathway Unit to a range of participants.

Y/103/1023 Review coaching sessions

Candidates will develop an understanding of the principles of evaluating their coaching and how effective evaluation can contribute to the further development of their coaching practice through structured self-assessment and action planning.
