The safe use of mowers requires competent operators. This assessment provides competency on a mower with one of four types of cutting mechanism - cylinder, rotary, flail or reciprocating knife. Also includes clearing blockages, safe techniques and cutting patterns.

You must be able to manoeuvre the mower skilfully and safely. You need to be able to assess the condition of the grass and adjust the mower to achieve maximum efficiency of grass cutting as well as carrying out routine maintenance.
The assessment may be taken on a mower with one of 4 types of cutting mechanism: cylinder, rotary, flail, reciprocating knife.
Please note: The 2 hour assessment takes place on a separate day by arrangement between the candidate and the external NPTC appointed assessor.

H/101/1003 − Operate Mower
What is involved?
One day training and one 2 hour assessment on a separate day by arrangement between the candidate and the NPTC appointed assessor.
What's Required?
Minimum age for this course is 16 years. Tetanus protection is recommended.

| Progression : | NPTC have a variety of Level 2 Certificates of Competence that may be of interest to candidates achieving this qualification e.g. Safe Use of Turf Maintenance Equipment, Safe Use of Hedge Trimmers, Safe Use of Pedestrian Controlled Power Driven Cultivators, Tractor Driving, ATV Handling, Granular Fertiliser Application and Land-based Machine Maintenance. Candidates can find employment in various Horticultural areas including golf courses, parks and amenity areas. There is also the possibility to progression onto work-based NVQ levels 2 and 3 in a related area. |
| Unit Assessment Method : | Oral Examination |
| Overal Assessment Method : | All NPTC Certificates of Competence are independently assessed by NPTC approved, trained assessors, who have no vested interest in the outcome of the assessment. This qualification is assessed by one-to-one oral questioning of the underpinning knowledge which backs up the practical skills, assessed by observation of the candidates' performance. The assessment schedule is attached to this submission, which provides details of the content of the qualification, as well as the marking guide and the standard the candidate must achieve. |
