The range of job roles for which this award is appropriate includes those who represent health and safety issues of the workforce to the employer, or hold a position of day-to-day control, such as line manager, team leader or supervisor.
What will I be learning about?
If you are involved in health and safety issues at work, even though it may not be your main job, this qualification is designed for you.
The course covers developing safety procedures, managing risk assessments and promoting a positive health and safety culture and consists of five mandatory units:
- Reduce risks to health and safety
- Develop safety procedures
- Monitor procedures
- Promote a positive health and safety culture
- Risk assessment.
Plus two optional units from the following:
- Investigate accidents / incidents
- Ensure actions protect the environment
- Review health and safety procedures in workplaces
- Supervise learners in the workplace.
Y/104/0305 − Make sure your own actions reduce risks to health and safety
D/104/0306 − Develop procedures to safely control work operations
H/104/0307 − Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
K/104/0308 − Promote a healthy and safe culture in the workplace
M/104/0309 − Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of a workplace

Classroom based with observations and assessments at your place of work.
What's Required?
None, but a level 2 health and safety qualification is recommended.
How will I be assessed?
Practical assessment supported with written evidence in a portfolio.

It is about having an appreciation of significant risks in your workplace, knowing how to identify and deal with them.D/104/0306 Develop procedures to safely control work operations This unit is for people who are required to prepare health and safety procedures for the workplace. In order to be sure that all reasonably practicable precautions have been taken against risks to health and safety it is necessary for an employer to make sure health and safety procedures are available for everyone at work to follow. This unit is for the person who will prepare the procedures.H/104/0307 Monitor procedures to safely control work operations This unit is for people with responsibility for checking and co-coordinating healthy and safe work operations. This person could, for example, be a union or non-union safety representative, a supervisor, a line manager or team leader.K/104/0308 Promote a healthy and safe culture in the workplace This unit is for a person who has a responsibility for encouraging others to become aware of the importance of following health and safety instructions by promoting the benefits of doing so.M/104/0309 Conduct a health and safety risk assessment of a workplace This Unit is for people carrying out a risk assessments in the workplace.
