Is it right for me?

The course is intended for students wishing to pursue a career within the numerous rapidly developing equine support industries and associated advisory services (eg research, consultancy, inspection, behavioural and physical therapies). The course structure includes units common to the Animal Behaviour and Welfare programme (providing students with a broad understanding of underpinning concepts and offering the option to delay specialisation until the second year if preferred) coupled with elective modules specific to the requirements of the equine industry.

Year 1 − Level C:

Year 2 − Level I:

  • Equine breeding

  • Equine exercise, physiology and biochemistry
  • Applied conservation of exotics and wildlife
  • Independent research project

What is involved?

This two year full time course requires 3 days per week attendance at Kingston Maurward College and includes an 8 week industry placement prior to starting Year 2. The course is presented through a combination of lectures, discussions, assignments, practical activities, visiting guest speakers, specialist visits and work experience. Students can also expect to attend a study tour.

Where will it take me?

This qualification offers excellent employment opportunities in the following areas: equine welfare organisations, assurance, inspection and enforcement agencies, wildlife conservation organisations, animal collections, laboratory technicians, equine behaviour consultancy and training.

What's Required?

120 UCAS points − including at least Grade C A level in a biological science or average of PPP at Level 3 Extended Diploma in Animal Management (Previously National Diploma). Recommended GCSEs: Maths, English, Biological Science. Mature entry is actively encouraged and relevant work experience will be considered in place of formal qualifications.

How will I be assessed?

A combination of assignments, presentations, course work, vocational practicals, case diaries and written examinations.
