SET SAIL TO A NEW FUTURE
Published: January 26, 2010
Cast off on a new career or pastime by taking a Day Skipper Course (shore-based) here at Kingston Maurward, starting February 11.
The part-time evening course is being held on campus Thursday evenings (7 to 10pm) until May 27.
The Level 1 Qualification is awarded by the Royal Yachting Association and covers the basics of seamanship, coastal navigation and pilotage, chart work, and position fixing.
Course plotting, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, collision regulations and emergency and safety such as using flares and life jackets are also covered.
“If you want to start yachting, have minimal experience or perhaps are already a competent crew, this comprehensive introduction course will give you the skills and confidence you need for safe cruising at sea,” said a college spokesperson.
“This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day and give you basic knowledge of lights to introduce you to night cruising.”
The course costs £325.
