Tree TimeThey planted more than two trees every minute to ensure they were ahead of time in the Tree O’Clock campaign.

Junior keepers, conservationists and former students were among the volunteers at Kingston Maurward College joining thousands nationally trying to set a new world record for the number of trees simultaneously planted in one hour.

The 34-strong team at our Dorchester campus planted a staggering 112 native trees in only 55 minutes, across a 200sq metre site.

“We had a great turnout and our volunteers worked superbly despite the ground being quite hard in places,” said head gardener, Nigel Hewish.

“They showed excellent team spirit and were watched in their work by creatures in our animal park seeing their home transformed.”

The mass planting was in aid of the national Breathing Places campaign called Tree O'Clock, which celebrates the role trees play in nature.

Two independent community witnesses, on behalf of Guinness World Records, were at the college to verify the work of the campus volunteers.

National organisers say they are still compiling evidence from across the country to see if the world record has been broken.
